Before the popular mash-up of ingredients known as dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken and veggies), there was OG-style Korean bbq utilizing chicken called sootbul dakgalbi – marinated/seasoned chicken thighs grilled over fiery charcoal. Here at Hwagyeok, they pay homage to this Chuncheon specialty by serving three delicious versions (garlic, soy, spicy) – and all three versions are remarkably flavorful, tender, juicy, and extra smoky from the thin wires that they’re grilled over. Combine them with the equally impressive supporting cast of gyeran jjim, Andong soju, Haechang makgeolli, etc. and this place easily makes it onto one of my regular rotations (been three times and counting). Although beef and pork are largely associated with Korean BBQ, you won’t regret this version that’s healthier and more budget-friendly (11,000 won per serving) than your standard BBQ joints.
