Seoyang Sikdang 서양식당 (Yeongdeungpo, Seoul)

Here’s another review that is four months late, but thankfully the food was so great that I had no difficulty remembering this visit to Seoyang Sikdang (“Western Restaurant”), a relatively new, modern, and cozy restaurant specializing in handmade, made-to-order donkassue (aka tonkatsu or breaded pork cutlets) and other Western-style dishes.

Close to Yeongdeungpo Station and next to Dangsan Park, this place serves up some of the best donkassue in Seoul (I kid you not), even giving my favorite spot a run for its money. The cutlets are moist and juicy while the outer breading is perfectly fried to a golden hue, giving each and every bite a nice combination of crunch and tenderness. Furthermore, the house-made sauce has a lot of zing and tanginess compared to normal sauces. Large pieces of red chili peppers were present as well, which to my disappointment, were harmless and barely gave off any heat. The sides were freshly made and gave balance to an already satisfying meal. Here’s my take on the two dishes ordered that day posted on my Instagram acct. awhile back: anshim donkkaseu 안심돈까스 (breaded pork tenderloin). Similar to the garlic version, this one was even more tender without any sinewy or chewy pieces sometimes found in other cutlets. Also, I liked having the sauce on the side to avoid any soggy breading; maneul donkkaseu 마늘돈까스 (garlic breaded pork cutlets). Light n airy breading and super tender meat under a savory, very tangy katsu sauce makes this one of the better donkkaseu in Seoul.

Note: the restaurant is a proponent of the “slow food” movement, which basically highlights the use of quality, fresh, and local ingredients; they don’t use any frozen meats to ensure top quality cutlets. Because of this, the only caveat is the extended wait time. There were only two other parties when my friend and I placed our order, but it took a good 20 minutes for our food to arrive. The old saying “good things come to those who wait” fittingly applies here at Seoyang Sikdang but I promise it won’t disappoint. 🙂
