Mama Donkasseu 마마돈가스 (Korea University, Seoul)

Part 1: Cheese donkkaseu (deep-fried pork cutlets stuffed with cheese) at one of my favorite mom n pop eateries near Korea University. Not only do they serve mouthwatering varieties of cutlets made in-house, they’re animal lovers who welcome pets and their owners to dine in their outdoor patio deck. Finally, a dog-friendly restaurant serving high-quality Korean food.

Part 2: “We’ve been in business for almost 20 years, but it has never been this bad. Even our regular customers – our lifeline – have stopped coming due to the coronavirus pandemic, putting our shop in serious jeopardy for the first time. My husband and I thought about selling the restaurant, but who’s gonna buy at a time like this? I’m sure other restaurants are also suffering like us, but as a local eatery, we had to work harder and longer to compete with bigger chains and franchises. That’s why we deep-fry our cutlets in fresh oil and procure quality pork from Majang Meat Market. We keep things simple by seasoning the meat with salt, pepper, and ginger powder, then tenderize it with a tenderizer needle. No need to brine or soak these cutlets in milk. If you have quality ingredients to work with, you don’t want to ruin it by overworking it. We hope customers realize this difference when they dine at our restaurant.”

Part 3: It’s wonderful to see @iggy_becker provide solace, however temporary, to the kind owners here at Mama Donkkaseu. In exchange, we’re always rewarded with terrific food that would easily compete with the best in terms of cost and quality. Through our many walks around different neighborhoods in Seoul, this might be the best find because it’s not easy to find a place to eat comfortably with a furry companion.

Pictured, in no particular order, are the standout dishes that I’ve had the pleasure of eating the past two weeks: modeum 모듬 (pork, chicken, fish, udon), cheese 치즈, saewoo 새우 (shrimp and pork), karae 카레 (pork with curry), nabae 나베 (kimchi jjigae with pork and udon noodles), saewoo bokkeumbap 새우볶음밥 (shrimp fried rice).
