Haenam Wonjo Kimbap 해남원조김밥 (Bangbae-dong, Seoul)

My first kimbap recommendation in two years goes to this family-run business called Haenam Wonjo Kimbap. The extensive menu might be a concern for indecisive people, but the friendly owners relayed their most popular varieties and that’s what I got: yubu kimbap (dried tofu), ulkeun (spicy), and chamchi (tuna). With high-quality base ingredients such as rice, eggs, burdock root, carrots, and pickled radish, the kimbap are reminiscent of your mother’s homemade versions but even better. The yubu kimbap has a unique texture (ie. slightly crunchy) from the dehydrated tofu skins that are stir-fried in a large vat. The ulkeun kimbap includes pickled cheongyang chili peppers, giving the rolls a nice balance of sweet, spicy, and sour. The chamchi is a delicious mess of mayo and canned tuna, which I personally enjoyed the most. Priced nominally in the 3,000 won range, these kimbaps are a big hit with locals and usually sell out by late afternoon. When you’ve been in business for over three decades, it’s easy to understand why this small operation can compete with the best of them.
