Encouraged by private messages about the exact whereabouts of this grilled fish restaurant posted on my IG stories a few days ago, I’m happy to post earlier than usual because I had the same feeling once my friend MOKJA posted a mouthwatering video of grilled fish sizzling on an iron plate. Being a big fan of grilled fish, it was an easy decision to scrap our previous appt. at a Michelin-approved restaurant and I headed over to Hapjeong Station.
Saengsun Gui Jeonmunjeom (“grilled fish specialty”) is a fitting name to this local hotspot renowned for their “modeum gui,” a unique combination of four different fish popular here on the peninsula: godeungeo 고등어 (mackerel), samchi 삼치 (Spanish mackerel), gajami 가자미 (sole/flatfish), and galchi 갈치 (beltfish/hairtail). It’s not hard to get quality grilled fish in Seoul (ie. Daewon Sikdang 대원식당, Hanil Sikdang 한일식당), but you’ll be hard pressed to get a variety such as this for a single serving–for only 9,000 won per person. Even better, the fish are perfectly cooked to my liking, lightly dusted with flour/starch and then pan-fried in some oil to get them crispy and crunchy. All uniquely different in taste and texture but so delicious. My favorite was the mackerel, which was oily, fleshy, and the most flavorful, but I found myself picking at the moist, flaky flatfish as well.
Although the grilled fish take center stage here, it would be a shame not to mention the thoughtfully prepared banchan and miyeok guk 미역국 (seaweed soup) and soongnyung 숭늉 (scorched rice soup), all enhancing the dining experience at this fantastic restaurant located out of exit 7 of Hapjeong Station. Pictured is a two-person serving for an unbeatable 18,000 won. 🐟
