Bong Memil 봉메밀 (Hanam, Gyeonggi Province)

You are gorgeous. Spicy buckwheat noodles with a generous portion of pollack, slivers of radish, cucumber, dried laver, buckwheat sprouts, and the all-important hard-boiled egg. But what sets this one apart from all others is the amped-up sauce, carrying extra heat from well-disguised cheongyang chili peppers 청양고추 (Korea’s hottest pepper) along with small nuggets of ground pork that made it clear the owners wanted customers to lick the bowl clean (which I did). Although the sauce was somewhat spicy, it was mitigated by the super-chilled noodles and fragrant sesame oil, both essentials for any good bowl of makguksu 막국수. The addition of refreshingly crunchy yeolmu kimchi 열무김치 (young summer radish kimchi) didn’t hurt either, confirming that an authentic bowl of Gangwon’s representative dish can be found in the city.

Bong Memil (main branch) lies on the border of Seoul and Hanam city, easily accessible by car or a short taxi ride from Sangil Station (purple line #5). The menu is extensive, but according to the friendly emos, the stars of the show are makguksu and kalguksu, offered in several varieties to please even the pickiest of eaters. As evident in the pics, the place is dog-friendly and much approved by @iggy_becker. 🐶
