Daesung Jip 대성집 (Jongro, Seoul)

As we head into the heart of winter, I find myself seeking out food to keep me warm well after my meal is finished. This can only be achieved by eating what Koreans do better than anyone else: soups and stews. There are plenty of amazing soups to choose from, but one of my favorites these days is an often overlooked soup called dogani-tang (ox knee soup). It’s not as appealing and popular as its beefy counterparts (ie. seolleungtang, galbitang), but in terms of taste, texture, and health benefits (chock full of protein for joints and collagen for skin), you would be hard pressed to find a comparable dish. After hours of online research, one restaurant stood out among its competitors: Daesung Jip. an establishment spanning 60 years near Dongnimmun Gate.

I remember biking over to the restaurant during off-hours to avoid the lunch rush, but even after arriving well after lunchtime the place was already jam-packed. In addition to being filled with hungry patrons, it was a lively bunch who clearly felt right at home–possibly reliving and yearning for nostalgic years. Since I was a newbie, the kind emos (“aunties”) gave me instructions on how to eat the soup: season the soup to taste by adding dried chili peppers, salt, and pepper; dip the cartilage and tendon pieces in the dipping sauce, and make sure to eat the meat with the crunchy and thoughtfully-prepared banchan varieties. I couldn’t stop eating the spicy garlic side dish, perfectly complementing the slightly gelatinous, crunchy pieces of cartilage/tendon and the rich, invigorating broth. For a modest 12,000 won, I can understand why this restaurant packs it in every day, no matter what time of day. The next time you’re craving a comforting bowl of Korean soup, this institution will not disappoint.
