Korean BBQ doesn’t get any better than this place that sells only one spectacular dish: Dweji Galbi (BBQ Pork Ribs). I’ve mentioned it time and time again that places that are courageous enough to serve one dish probably won’t disappoint–Gyeongsangdo Jip is no exception. This 48-year-old institution in Euljiro is hardcore pocha-style where service is suspect, comfort is non-existent, and you’re at the mercy of the fluctuating weather. But none of that matters if you’re in the business of bomb food because you have arguably the best BBQ in the city. Pork ribs are meticulously cut down, bathed in an aromatic marinade for no less than 24 hours, and then hand-grilled over yeontan. The final result is tender, smoky pork ribs with perfect flavoring and caramelization. It was so delicious that I had no problem inhaling the minimum 2-person order, which still cost a respectable 24,000 won. Also, the lettuce leaf made for delicious wraps and the chojang sauce was a nice surprise in place of the more common ssamjang. For those who love Korean BBQ, this is a must-visit destination in a hard-to-find pocha atmosphere.
I was fortunate to meet and talk to the aging owner, who gave me some insight about her food. She says, “There’s no real secret to the dish except we hand-select the entire pork rib section from the butcher and cut it down ourselves. Not only does this reduce the overall cost, but the quality will be equal or above other pork BBQ restaurants.” I couldn’t agree more.
Pictured is their two-person serving at 24,000 won. Beer and soju run 4,000 won. And in true pocha-style fashion, they don’t accept credit cards so make sure to bring cash!
