Our second encounter with a group of haenyeo in the early morning hours near Kimnyeong Beach. We were surprised to find them using a fishing boat to take them out to sea since most tend to stay close to the shore. However, with overfishing and gradual depletion of the ocean’s natural resources, it’s understandable that they have to venture out further and further (also making it more dangerous).
Our encounter with them was brief, but just observing them was quite entertaining in itself. In true ajumma/halmoni (Korean middle-aged women/grandmother) fashion, they were direct, loud, boisterous, and full of indescribable energy before departing.
