Iki Roll Kaas (Hongdae, Seoul)

Recently made a visit to Hongdae to try out some “upgraded” tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlets) varieties and came out of with mixed feelings. On one hand, they did a nice job with the presentation and plating, but something tells me they focused little too much on the color combination rather than the overall taste (most likely following the Japanese adage “eat with your eyes first”). Out of the three dishes that were ordered, none really stood out to impress anyone in our group, and personally left me wanting the normal set that is regularly served at chains like Cobaco 코바코 and Midarae 미다래 and even some bunshik joints. With that said, it’s possible that I had too high of expectations after hearing they opened this location based on the success of their restaurant in the swanky Garosugil area near Apgujeong. It’s possible that my palate wasn’t ready for a combination of flying fish eggs, cheese, and julienned cucumbers. It’s also possible that we ordered three of the less popular dishes that night (but highly unlikely). Regardless, I think others might like this kind of stuff rather than the normal fare that I mentioned earlier. So, if you’re into different kinds of tonkatsu, or as one of the workers described as “upgraded, fancy tonkatsu,” it wouldn’t hurt to give this place a try if you’re in the Hongdae area.
